Protecting the Nation's First State Dedicated Nature Preserve
Plants of the Illinois Dunesland
By Dr. Elizabeth T. Lunn
Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society’s Acclaimed Authoritative Work
Dr. Elizabeth Teter Lunn’s book is considered to be a primer on the plants of this ecosystem. She did her undergraduate work at Wellesley College and graduate work at Northwestern University. As a professor at Lake Forest College, she took her own biology classes to the dunes area during studies of ecological succession.
The Dunes of the northeast corner of Lake County are the focus of this color-illustrated guide. Now known as Illinois Beach State Park, this area holds a rich diversity of native plants and the author describes about a quarter of the plants of the region. While primarily compiled as a guide to the Dunes, formerly known as “Waukegan Flats,” it is also useful in nearby Wisconsin, in the Michigan and Indiana dunes, and in other areas of the Midwest.
Beginning with flowers grouped by color, the guide also includes grasses, sedges and rushes. Dr. Lunn identified approximately 660 plants in the Nature Preserve at Illinois Beach State Park during the wildflower walks she led at Illinois Beach for many years. Each entry includes a color photograph, and the plant’s habitat, time of flowering and structure. Glossary, bibliography and index to common and scientific names are also provided. She wrote this guidebook to assure an appreciation of this beautiful ecosystem for future generations.

Many of the photographs on our site were taken by Ellen Powell, a Dunesland board member. Her parents, June and George Holland, were early members of Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society and were long-time friends of Jean and Leonard Yntema, founding members who are described on our History page. Ellen and her family have spent a lifetime enjoying and protecting the beauty of our park. Unless otherwise noted, the photographs were taken by Ellen Powell; you can feel her lifetime love of the park through her creative lens.
